Description: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death worldwide, is a heterogeneous lung condition characterized by chronic respiratory symptoms caused by persistent airflow limitation due to airway and alveolar abnormalities. Initial COPD management relies on bronchodilators with the addition of inhaled corticosteroids for those at high risk for exacerbations. However, up to half of patients on triple therapy still experience exacerbations, highlighting a need for new therapies. Biologic therapy targeting type 2 inflammation, which is common in COPD and associated with exacerbation risk, has recently been approved for clinical use as add-on maintenance treatment of adult patients with inadequately controlled COPD and an eosinophilic phenotype. This educational program is designed to get pulmonology experts up to date on these rapid treatment advances for COPD as well as to bolster standard-of-care fundamentals.

John Larsen

Carson Tahoe Health COPD Clinic
Physician Associate/Assistant

John “Kenny” Larsen grew up in northern Utah where he acquired a love for the outdoors and outdoor activities including snow skiing hiking and camping. His interest in respiratory disorders began while watching his sister cope with the difficulties associated with asthma. His medical pursuits began as an EMT through his community fire department, which motivated him to join the Weber State University Respiratory Therapy Program as a precursor to Physician Assistant studies.
Shortly after graduating with a Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies from Eastern Virginia Medical School, he began working at Riverside Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in Newport News Virginia. In the summer of 2018, he began employment at Carson Tahoe Health in Carson City, NV where he developed the Carson Tahoe COPD Clinic with a focus on reducing hospital readmission for patients discharged for acute exacerbation of COPD and pneumonia. He is medical director of the Carson Tahoe Health Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program and provides consultation services for obstructive lung diseases in the primary care setting.
